About Pilates

Imagine an exercise program that you look forward to, that engages you, and that leaves you refreshed and alert with a feeling of physical and mental well-being. The Pilates Method of body conditioning will do all this...and more.

Pilates, named for its founder Joseph Pilates, is a total conditioning program that works your body "from the inside out" by using the entire body and focusing on "core" muscles — mostly those in the stomach and back. It’s by doing this; all of your everyday movements will become more productive. It's a mind-body exercise, which, like yoga, stresses proper breathing while you do very precise body movements.

Pilates is a series of controlled movements engaging your body and mind. It is performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and is taught by extensively trained teachers.

Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits. Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing is a primary focus. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination-both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one's life.

Although taking both mat and equipment classes is best, either one alone is fine as long as you're consistent. Twice a week is great; three times is better.

Privates - the most effective way to focus on your individual unique needs, injuries or chronic concerns. Use as an initial evaluation as well as periodic tune-ups or opportunities to further your personal fitness goals.

Semi-Private Class - an opportunity to explore and "own" your individual Pilates program while receiving technical input from a shared instructor. Limited to 4 participants.

Mat Class - the essence of all Pilates work, a mat class incorporates a series of floor work exercises designed to create uniform development; long, lean muscles; core strength and breath control. Limited to 10 participants.

Prenatal and Postpartum Classes - tone abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and strengthen the arms, legs, and back to support the shifting center of gravity and loosening ligaments. Reconnect your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for this life altering experience!
